Scaling is the removal of calcareous tartar, or calculus deposits that accumulate on the teeth and gums. This is accomplished with a dental scaler, an instrument essential for the prevention of periodontal disease.
ApplicationsThese devices are used by dentists and dental hygienists in the dentist's office. They are employed prophylactically to prevent periodontitis, an inflammation caused by the bacteria in dental plaque, which hardens into tartar.
TechnologiesThere are three types of scaler:
- Ultrasonic, piezoelectric scalers have a tip which vibrates very rapidly to dislodge tartar particles.
- Pneumatic models are equipped with tips driven by compressed air.
- Manual scalers remove calculus mechanically. They are often used in conjunction with periodontal curettes.
Choice will depend on the ergonomic characteristics, the sterilization requirements and the range of applications of each scaler. Ultrasonic and pneumatic versions have a series of interchangeable tips, making them suitable for a wide variety of situations.
