Legionellosis is a term for diseases caused by legionella bacteria including legionnaires disease. Legionnaires disease is a fatal form of pneumonia, the risk of the disease increases with age. The legionella pneumophila and related bacteria are found in natural water sources such as rivers and lakes. They may be found in purpose water systems such as spa pools and cold water systems. If conditions are favourable, the bacteria can grow increasing the risk of legionnaires disease. People can obtain the disease by inhaling small droplets of water which are in the air that contain the bacteria. The illness is treated with an antibiotic called erythromycin or a similar antibiotic.
