Salmonella is a food poisoning type which is caused by Salmonella enterica bacterium. The bacteria lives in the gut of many farm animals and can affect milk, meat, eggs and poultry. Foods such as vegetables and fruit become contaminated via contact with manure in the soil. It is impossible to notice whether food is infected with salmonella as it tastes normal. Salmonella can be spread from person to person by poor hygiene.
