The clamshell retractor is intended to be used for keeping up the top part of the chest in the interventions in which there is practised the Clamshell incision. This incision goes from side to side of the chest following the space that stays between the ribs and cutting also the breastbone.
Though the principal application is bilateral lung (of 2 lungs) transplant also it is in use for bilateral metastases or other indications that demand a great exhibition of the thoracic cavity.
