Heparin is a glycosaminoglycan which serves as an effectively affinity bind and ion exchange ligand for a wide range of biomolecules, including coagulation factors and other plasma proteins, lipoproteins, protein synthesis factors, enzymes that act on nucleic acids and steroid receptors.
