The Breathacise® spirometer is an incentive spirometer, utilizing a Basketball Game to exercise and help improve your respiratory capacity and strength. It does this by helping you exercise your respiratory capacity through deep breathing.
How does it work?
The Breathacise® spirometer has a built-in basketball game to provide an incentive for respiratory exercise. Set the basketball hoop to your desired target, inhale and using the indicator to ensure a steady, deep inhalation until you dunk the ball into the hoop.
What are the benefits?
As time progresses and you improve; exercise your respiratory capacity and raise the hoop higher to provide a bigger incentive. Respiration exercise retrains your lungs to take slow deep breaths and increases your respiratory capacity. This, in turn, helps improve your ability to breathe as it keeps your alveoli inflated. Keeping your alveoli inflated and working properly helps your lungs exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide more effectively. This is particularly important following illness or injury to help keep your lungs active and well. Deep breathing is also great for relaxation and peace of mind.
What is Inspiratory Reserve Volume (IRV)?
It is the amount of air that can be forcibly inhaled after a normal tidal volume. IRV is usually kept in reserve, but is used during deep breathing. The normal adult value is 1900-3300ml and Breathacise® can measure between 0 – 5000ml.
