It is mainly used clinically as an aid in the diagnosis of myocardial infarction and myopathy. CK is a dimeric enzyme with four different forms: mitochondrial isozyme and cytosolic isozyme CK-MM (myocardial), CK-BB (cerebral) and CK-MB. The value of CK-MB in serum is an important indicator for the diagnosis of myocardial ischemia (e.g. acute myocardial infarction, myocarditis, etc.). More than 5% of CK-MB is present in prostate, spleen or skeletal muscle, and the amount of CK-MB varies with the function of the muscle type. This upward and downward pattern of CK-MB values, accompanied by the evolution of the ECG and a history of chest pain, is often considered diagnostic of AMI.
