Intended Use:
Antimüllerian hormone is a dimeric glycoprotein belonging to the transforming growth factor beta (TGF β) family. In males, AMH is secreted by the supporting cells of the testis. During male embryonic development, AMH secretion from the supporting cells of the testis is responsible for the recession of the müllerian duct and the normal development of the male reproductive tract. AMH secretion from the supporting cells begins during embryogenesis and continues throughout life; AMH continues to be produced from the testes until puberty and then slowly decreases to post-pubertal levels. In females, AMH plays an important role in follicular development of the ovary. FSH directs the cyclic recruitment of AMH expression in the granulosa cells starting in the primary follicles and reaching its highest level in the preluminal granulosa cells and the small sinusoidal follicles with a maximum diameter of approximately 6 mm. When follicle growth becomes FSH-dependent, AMH expression is lost and undetectable. Serum levels of AMH are almost undetectable at birth and reach their highest levels after puberty. It then decreases with age and is undetectable after menopause. Serum AMH levels have been shown to be relatively stable over the course of the menstrual cycle, with significant fluctuations observed in younger women. The clinical use of AMH testing is recommended for the prognosis of various indications.
