Calcitoninogen (PCT) is a 116 amino acid hormone with a molecular weight of approximately 12.7 kD. PCT is expressed by neuroendocrine cells (including C cells of thyroid, lung and pancreatic tissues) and is enzymatically cleaved into (immature) calcitonin, carboxy-terminal peptide and amino-terminal peptide. Healthy human blood contains only small amounts of PCT. PCT is significantly increased by bacterial infection. The PCT in septicemic patients contains only 114 amino acids and lacks the amino-terminal Ala-Pro. As a new and innovative experimental indicator of serious bacterial infections and other diseases, the PCT has improved the accuracy of clinical diagnosis and has been used in intensive care, radiotherapy, immunosuppressive drugs or organ transplantation.
