Intended Use:
This product is used for the in vitro quantitative determination of total thyroxine (TT4) in human serum. Tetraiodothyronine (T4), the main hormone secreted by the thyroid gland, has a molecular weight of 777 and a half-life of 6-7 days. The formation and release of T4 is regulated by Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). Most of the plasma triiodothyronine (T3) is metabolized in the peripheral tissues by 5' deiodination of T4, which is a more active thyroid hormone than T4, but is circulating in much greater amounts in serum than T3. Both T4 and T3 play a role in regulating various biochemical processes in the body and are necessary for normal physiological metabolism and nervous system activity. The majority of T4 circulating in the body is protein bound, with only 0.04% of T4 in the free state, which is currently considered to be biologically active. The main T4 binding proteins are thyroid binding globulin (TBG), prealbumin and albumin, which account for approximately 60%, 30% and 10% of the total, respectively. For example, pregnancy or contraceptive use, chronic hepatitis and biliary sclerosis increase TBG levels, while renal disease and androgen therapy decrease them. The concentration of serum TT4 is closely related to thyroid function and its quantification is an important clinical indicator for assessing thyroid function and pathological status.
