Description

Califia patient simulator is designed to simulate a patient before, during and after cardiopulmonary bypass for open heart surgery or Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation therapy. It is a physiologically responsive system… designed to attach to any heart-lung machine circuit or to any ECMO machine circuit either in VA or VV configuration. It is intended both as a teaching tool and as a tool for evaluating the performance of a heart-lung machine operator in the conduct of a simulated cardiopulmonary bypass or ECMO procedure. One of the most significant features of the patient simulator is the ability to script and load unique clinical scenarios. By doing so, any patient parameter, or machine setting can be pre-established and set automatically. These scenario steps include the patients’ physiological parameters, which of the ancillary monitors are displayed, and even text to speech entries for requests or other communication during the case. These individual scenario “steps” can be started and automatically advanced at predetermined intervals allowing students and professionals an unprecedented ability to simulate situations and evaluate outcomes in a way that was impossible to do outside of an operating room. In addition, progression through the scenario steps can be stopped and started at the instructors (operators’) discretion. Once a clinical scenario is loaded, the instructor can change anything, make comments and sequentially step through the case or allow it to proceed at the predetermined intervals.
