This enzyme plays an important role in the catabolism of purines in some species, including humans. XO utilizes oxygen and purine to produce superoxide radicals (O2•-) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as well as uric acid through the oxidative hydroxylation of hypoxanthine.
As the main source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in mammalian cells, XO is present in the pathogenesis of several oxidative stress related
diseases (e.g. ischemia-reperfussion, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, hiperlipidemia, cardiovascular and liver diseases).
BQC Xanthine oxidase Activity Assay Kit is an easy (one-step), quick and highly reproducible assay to measure the activity of xanthine oxidase in a wide variety of samples.
