Coagulation tube (double layer tube)
Coagulation tubes are used for the examination of coagulation parameters. The coagulation tubes contain a buffered sodium citrate solution. It is available with a citrate concentration of 0.109 mol/l (3.2%) or 0.129 mol/l (3.8%). The choice of concentration depends on laboratory policy. The mixing ratio is 1 part citrate solution to 9 parts blood.
Plasma tube
Plasma tubes are coated with lithium heparin or sodium heparin to inhibit coagulation. The heparin activates antithrombin, thereby blocking the coagulation cascade and producing a whole blood/plasma sample instead of clotted blood and serum. The lithium assay should not be performed in lithium heparin tubes. Samples collected in these tubes are used for plasma determinations in chemistry.
