Rapid AFP Test is an immunochromatography based one step in vitro test. It is designed for the rapid qualitative determination of AFP in serum, plasma or whole blood to aid in the diagnosis of Hepatocellular Carcinoma or fetal open neural tube defects.
Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP) is normally produced by the fetal liver, yolk sac. It is one of the first alpha-globulins to appear in mammalian sera during development of the embryo and the dominant serum proteins in early embryonic life. They reappear in the adult serum during certain pathologic states. An increased level of AFP in the blood is an indicator of liver cancer. AFP is found at high levels in the blood stream when liver tumors are present. A normal AFP level is less than 25ng/mL. When cancer is present, AFP levels have elevated more than 400ng/mL. Measurement of the AFP level in the blood stream by Rapid AFP Test has been used as an early detection test for hepatocellular carcinoma.
