Rapid Strep A Test is a qualitative test that detects group A streptococcal antigen. The test is a rapid, in vitro assay. It is intended for professional use to help diagnose Strep A infection in hospital and clinical laboratories.
Bacteria called group A Streptococcus (group A strep) can cause many different infections. Strep A organisms are usually spread by direct human-to-human transfer. The strep organism multiplies rapidly, dividing every 45 minutes and producing progressively worse symptoms that include a rising fever and rash.
A rapid rise in temperature occurring in the presence of even a trivial wound or sore throat should raise a suspicion of invasive strep A, which can be identified by a laboratory culture. By comparison with culture methods, a rapid strep A test is much quicker and can produce results within minutes.
