Determinations of bilirubin level in serum are mainly used in diagnosis of liver functions. Measurement of bilirubin concentration is used as an aid in diagnosis of clinical conditions associated with hyperbilirubinemia. Increased bilirubin levels can be observed in mechanical jaundice, Dubin-Jonson syndrome, bile ducts diseases, Gilbert’s syndrome, Crigler-Najjar syndrome. Bilirubin concentration is used as marker of the perforation in acute sigmoid diverticulitis and for a prediction of cardiovascular diseases.
