The anti-atherogenic effect of HIGH DENSITY LIPOPROTEIN CHOLESTEROL (HDL-C) is related to its activity stimulating the re-transport of cholesterol from cells, as well as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant (LDL-C protection against oxidation), anticoagulant, cytoprotection and diastolic activity of arteries. Low HDL-C levels are strongly associated with an increased risk of coronary artery disease. The HDL-C determination is used to identify high-risk patients. The cholesterol / HDL-C ratio is used to assess coronary heart disease (CHD).
