Creatinine is a product of creatine nonenzymatic dehydration in skeletal muscle. Determinations of creatinine level in serum, plasma and urine are mainly used as aid in diagnosis of renal diseases. Measurement of creatinine concentration is also used to monitor the state of the muscle mass (sudden loss of muscle mass, cancer cachexia, anorexia, limb paralysis) and diet reach in meat. Creatinine assay is used to aid diagnosis and monitor the state of the thyroid, aid monitoring of the diabetes and arterial hypertension treatment and to monitor the volume of the extracellular fluid.
