Pulse oximeters are portable, non-invasive medical devices normally worn on the finger that measure the oxygen saturation of a person’s blood. These devices are used in medical facilities such as hospitals, physicians’ offices, and sleep centers, but can also be used at home. Pulse oximeters are available for children and adults.
Traditionally used for medical purposes, pulse oximeters also measure pulse rate. Some measure Perfusion Index (PI) which measures pulse strength. Athletes, including runners, swimmers, and rock climbers, also use pulse oximeters.
