Description

PMMA is a non-foldable, rigid, hydrophobic material. PMMA was the first IOL material implanted into a human by Harold Ridley in 1949. PMMA is available in one-piece version and three-piece versions that are lathe cut from PMMA buttons or rods. It is known for its excellent tissue tolerance, long-term stability, and most importantly, its reduced cost. The designation PMMA comes from the material it’s made of: Polymethyl methacrylate. This material is non-toxic and is considered safe. It is rated as a low-hazard ingredient by the Cosmetics Database. PMMA is a transparent rigid thermoplastic material which also goes by its trademark names Perspex, Plexiglas and Lucite. PMMA is also called acrylic or acrylic glass. It is lightweight and resistant to shatter. Due to its impact-resistant properties, PMMA material is similar to polycarbonate.
