Propoxyphene is a mildly effective narcotic analgesic that has been in clinical use. It is less potent than codeine, and bears a close structural relationship to methadone. Propoxyphene is available in oral formulations either as the hydrochloride (32 or 65 mg) or as the napsylate salt (50 or 100 mg), and is often found in combination with aspirin or acetaminophen. Overdosage with propoxyphene can result in stupor, coma, convulsions, respiratory depression, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension, pulmonary edema and circulatory collapse.
