Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), on the other hand, are mycobacteria that do not cause TB but can cause a range of other respiratory illnesses, including lung infections, pneumonia, and bronchitis. The simultaneous detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) and Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) is important because both types of mycobacteria can cause respiratory illnesses with similar symptoms, but require different treatment approaches.
