Although conventional batch culture is economical and easy to handle, cells suffer from static culture conditions: The availability of metabolites and oxygen continuously deteriorates over a supply cycle - while waste products accumulate in the supernatant medium. In vitro, cells gain significantly higher functionality when cultivated under constant flow conditions in a constant physiological environment. Perfusion culture systems can be used to create in vivo-like conditions, but their application has so far been limited to small formats and has required a lot of set-up work.
