This versatile training phantom assists learners with image acquisition and orientation skills. Two “vessels” of different shapes and depths can be found in the phantom and help novices understand frequent areas of confusion such as image orientation and essential sonographic principles such as depth and plane of cut. The vessels can be scanned from the top, bottom, and sides to mimic common scan planes in the body. The lumen of the shapes can be refilled using a syringe filled with water, custom solutions, or air to demonstrate principles of varying echogenicity and artifact generation.
This phantom can be used by the individual scanner or for a hands-on activity as part of an introduction to ultrasound course. It serves as an approachable and non-intimidating medium to become comfortable with scanning basics. Teach using the clear version for extra visual feedback or use an opaque version for testing. This vessel trainer will perform well using any ultrasound imaging system configured with the appropriate transducer (high frequency linear probe).
We recommend this ultrasound phantom for the following specialties:
Anesthesiology
Emergency medicine
Nursing
Surgery
Ultrasound training programs
Simulation centers
Surgical skills centers
Medical education facilities
While clear phantoms offer a superior visual appearance to teach important anatomical concepts they do have a darker appearance due to lack of additive simulating human tissue on ultrasound. To use them with ultrasound imaging devices the gain function will need to be increased to 80-90%.
