Epidemiology
Syphilis is an infectious disease caused by treponema pallidum. Syphilis is a unique human disease. Patients with dominant and recessive syphilis are the source of infection. People infected with treponema pallidum contain a large amount of treponema pallidum in their secretions of skin lesions and blood. It can be divided into congenital syphilis and acquired syphilis.
Treponema pallidum enters the blood circulation of the fetus through the placenta, causing systemic infection of the fetus. Treponema pallidum reproduces in large numbers in the fetal organs (liver, spleen, lung and adrenal gland) and tissues, causing miscarriage or stillbirth. If the fetus does not die, symptoms such as skin syphilis tumors, periostitis, jagged teeth, and neurological deafness will appear.
Acquired syphilis has complex manifestations and can be divided into three stages according to its infection process: primary syphilis, secondary syphilis, and tertiary syphilis. Primary and secondary syphilis are collectively referred to as early syphilis, which is highly contagious and less destructive. Tertiary syphilis, also known as late syphilis, is less contagious, longer and more destructive.
