A copper-based, non-hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) that prevents the fertilized oocyte from getting implanted in the uterus. This activity is reinforced in an ancillary manner, through the presence of copper. Copper has a cytotoxic effect on gametes which damages the sperm, thereby inhibiting fertilization. The Gynelle®IUD is effective from the day of its insertion.
Gynelle® is a long-term (5 years) reversible contraceptive method, which is indicated in nulliparous, first-time and multiparous women for:
Usual first-line intrauterine contraception
Emergency post-coital intrauterine contraception (within 5 days of unprotected or poorly protected intercourse)
Postpartum and postabortion intrauterine contraception (within 48 hours postpartum or postabortion or after the uterus’s complete involution).
Gynelle® is made up of a stem, extended by 2 flexible branches with projections. The rod is surrounded by a copper wire with a total area of 375 mm2. The flexible side branches ensure that Gynelle® is kept as high as possible at the bottom of the uterus without stretching the uterine cavity. A single filament nylon thread is attached to the stem.
Gynelle® measures 19mm wide × 35.5mm long
