A copper-based, non-hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) that prevents the fertilized oocyte from implanting in the uterus. This activity is reinforced in an ancillary manner through the presence of copper. Copper has a cytotoxic effect on gametes causing damage to sperm, which inhibits fertilization. The UT 380® IUD is effective from the day of its insertion.
A long-term (5 years) reversible contraceptive method which is indicated in nulliparous, first-time and multiparous women for:
Usual first-line intrauterine contraception,
Emergency post-coital intrauterine contraception (within 5 days of unprotected or poorly protected intercourse)
Postpartum and postabortion intrauterine contraception (within 48 hours postpartum or postabortion or after complete involution of the uterus).
UT 380® consists of a body composed of two flexible polyethylene arms, which contains barium sulphate, starting from a vertical axis, around which a 380 mm2 copper wire is wound. A single strand nylon thread is attached at its center to the base of the device.
