A copper-based, non-hormonal intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) that prevents the fertilized oocyte from getting implanted in the uterus. This activity is reinforced in an ancillary manner through the presence of copper. Copper has a cytotoxic effect on gametes causing damage to sperm, which inhibits fertilization. The NT 380® IUD is effective right from the day it has been inserted.
A reversible long-term (5 years) contraceptive method indicated in nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women for:
Usual first-line intrauterine contraception,
emergency post-coital intrauterine contraception (within 5 days of unprotected or poorly protected intercourse)
postpartum and post-abortion intrauterine contraception(within 48 hours post-partum or post-abortion or after complete involution of the uterus)
NT 380® consists of a body composed of two flexible polyethylene arms, containing barium sulphate, starting from a vertical axis, around which a 380 mm2 copper and silver alloy wire is wound. A single strand nylon thread is attached from the center to the base of the device.
