Description

PRL EIA Test Kit An enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for the quantitative detection of PRL (prolactin) in human serum. The PRL EIA Test Kit is an enzyme immunoassay for in vitro quantitative determination of PRL (prolactin) level in human serum. PRL (Prolactin) hormone is secreted from the anterior pituitary gland in both men and woman.1 It is a protein consisting of a single polypeptide chain containing approximately 200 amino acids.2 The release and synthesis of prolactin is under neuroendocrinal control, primarily through prolactin releasing factor and prolactin inhibiting factor.3 Prolactin hormone is on the mammary gland where it is involved in the growth of the gland and in the induction and maintenance of milk production. However, the high levels of progesterone during pregnancy act directly on the breasts to stop ejection of milk. It is only when the levels of this hormone fall after childbirth that milk ejection is possible. Sometimes newborn babies (males as well as females) secrete a milky substance from their nipples. This substance is commonly known as Witch's milk. This is caused by the fetus being affected by prolactin circulating in the mother just before birth, and usually stops soon after birth. Hyperprolactinemia has been established as a common cause of infertility and gonadal disorders in men and women.
