Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is a gonadotropin, which refers to a glycoprotein polypeptide hormone, and is essential to pubertal development and the function of women’s ovaries and men’s testes. FSH regulates the development, growth, pubertal maturation, and reproductive processes of the body.
FSH and Luteinizing hormone (LH) act synergistically in reproduction. High levels of FSH may indicate premature menopause also known as premature ovarian failure, poor ovarian reserve, gonadal digenesis, turner syndrome, castration, swyer syndrome, certain forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), and testicular failure – all conditions associated with infertility and/or subfertility.
