N-terminal pro hormone B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is a non-active prohormone produced by the human heart and that is released from the same molecule that produces BNP. NT-pro BNP is continually produced in small quantities and is released in higher quantities in response to changes in pressure inside the heart – or when then heart senses that it needs to work harder.
These changes can be related to heart failure and other cardiac problems. NT-pro BNP test is used to help detect, diagnose, and evaluate the severity of heart disease, including congestive heart failure.
