What is calcium? Calcium is the fifth most abundant element in the body. Most of it in the human adult is extracellular and 99% of it exists as crystalline hydroxyapatite in bones and teeth where it confers rigidity. It plays a major role in the mechanisms of nerve impulse transmission, muscular contraction and blood coagulation. Secretion from the parathyroid glands, thyroid C cells and pancreatic B cells is controlled by the extracellular ionised calcium concentration at the cell surface. What is the calcium assay used for? It is tested to diagnosis and monitor numerous conditions related to the heart, nerves, bones and kidneys.
