Retroviruses are an important infectious agent in cats worldwide. The FeLV disease manifests primarily through profound anemia, malignancies, and immunosuppression. Cats infected with FeLV produce varying levels of antigen against protein P27 in their blood which makes serological testing for antigen an excellent diagnostic tool. Infection with the Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) leads to disruption of the animal’s immune status and makes it prone to co-infections with other diseases (i.e. FeLV). Lymphadenomegaly, stomatitis, conjunctivitis, as well as diseases of the upper respiratory tract, can occur. An FIV-infected cat may not show any symptoms for years, but the cats infected V produce high levels of antibodies throughout their lifetimes making it advantageous to diagnose the disease with serological testing.
