Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the Neisseria gonorrhea bacterium. Gonorrhea is one of the most common infectious bacterial diseases and is most frequently transmitted through sexual intercourse, both vaginal, oral and anal. The causing organism can infect the throat, producing a severe sore throat. It can infect the anus and rectum, causing a condition called proctitis. On women, it can infect the vagina causing irritation and discharge (vaginitis). Infection of the urethra can cause urethritis with burning, painful urination and discharge. When women experience symptoms, they often notice vaginal discharge, increased urinary frequency, and discomfort in urination. The spread of the body to the fallopian tubes and abdomen can cause severe abdominal pain and fever. The average incubation of gonorrhea is approximately 2-5 days following sexual intercourse with an infected partner.
