Hygromycin is a selective antibiotic prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, it is used in transformation of plants. The theory behind screening hygromycin B is that cells containing hygromycin B resistance genes can express a type of kinase which could inactivate hygromycin through phosphorylation. Low purity of hygromycin could cause different toxic effects which leads to the failure of screening experiments, therefore, the purity of hygromycin is extremely important.
Hygromycin can also be used as a selective marker during plant transformation.
