Neonatal jaundice is seen as a yellowing of the skin due to heightened levels of bilirubin, a compound in the blood. Severe jaundice, if nottreated, can lead to brain damage, hearing loss, and even death. According to statistics, clinically 80% of pre-term and 60% of fullterm infants are at risk of hyperbilirubinemia. Blue light irradiation(Phototherapy )is a simple, effective and quick treatment for neonatal jaundice (hyperbilirubinemia). It's used to treat newborn jaundice by lowering the bilirubin levels in your baby's blood through a process called photo-oxidation. Photo-oxidation adds oxygen to the bilirubin so it dissolves easily in water. This makes it easier for your baby's liver to break down and remove the bilirubin from their blood.
