The presence of occult (hidden) blood in stool is associat- ed with gastrointestinal disorders such as diverticulitis, pol- yps, Inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn’s disease), hemorrhoids, as well as colorectal cancer (CRC).
Early diagnosis by fecal occult blood screening and treat- ment of these problems has been shown to reduce mortality from colorectal cancer significantly.
There are two common rapid methods for detecting Fecal Occult Blood; the first uses the chemical Guaiac to produce color in the presence of heme in blood but is susceptible to interferences from diet and medication. The second method is a chromatographic immunoassay that uses specific anti- bodies to detect blood in stool and is not affected by food or medication.
