Summary
Candida albicans is the most common human opportunistic fungal pathogen. Candida
albicans can be isolated from the gastrointestinal tract, and oral and vaginal mucosa of
many healthy individuals. Although, a number of fungal species belonging to the genus
Candida can cause acute vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), Candida albicans is the most
prevalent etiological agent, particularly for the most severe chronic condition known as
recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC).
