High-efficiency Particulate Air filters (HEPA), sometimes referred to as “absolute filters”, can retain 99.9997% of particles of 0.3 µm.
Filtration by HEPA filters is not a simple process, but it is the combination of different mechanisms: inertial impact (especially for particles > 1 µm at high flow speeds), electrostatic retention (particles 0.5-1 µm) and diffuse retention (particles < 0.5 µm at low speed).
