It is impossible to imagine an ophthalmologist's office without Syvtsev's table. It is used to check visual acuity. The table consists of 7 alternating Ukrainian letters, which are arranged in 12 rows, their size gradually decreases from 70 to 3.5 mm.
Application of Syvtsev's table
Syvtsev's table is used to test the eyesight of people who know the ukrainian alphabet. An alternative is Golovin's table, where instead of letters, open rings with different orientations of gaps (Landolt rings) are depicted. When evaluating, they focus on the numbers that are given on the sides of each row of symbols. Parameter D on the left is the distance in meters from which a person should normally see this line (50 m for the first - 2.5 for the last). On the right - indicator V, the visual acuity of a patient who, when checked from 5 m (reference distance), sees most of the letters in a given row and above. In rows 1-6, 1 error is permissible, in 7-10 - up to 2.
The verification procedure requires:
place the patient 5 meters from the table in a bright room;
additionally illuminate the canvas so that the light falls on it and does not hit the eyes, the illumination should be 700 lux;
ask the patient to cover one eye with a special screen, but do not press on it and do not close it;
testing usually starts from the bottom rows, points to the letter and gives up to 3 seconds to name it. If the patient does not distinguish the letters in this row, go above;
if the patient cannot see even the top line from a standard distance, he is asked to move closer to half a meter and repeat the test, then another half meter until he begins to distinguish letters.
