An increase in the level of phosphorus will cause a decrease in calcium. This mutual adjustment mechanism is achieved through the interaction between parathyrin and vitamin D. Decreased levels of parathyrin, decreased VD levels, and decreased glomerular filtration rate caused by renal failure can all cause increased levels of phosphorus. Hypophosphatemia can occur in patients with rickets, high levels of parathyrin, and De Toni-Fanconi syndrome.
